2024 Did Not Go As Planned

I have high hopes for 2025!

The word Hope stitched onto circular ornament.

As the year winds down I can't help but feel disappointed that my freelance business did not take off as I had planned. Nope, I am still working a 9-5 job that bores me to pieces and brings me little fulfillment. I'm still working for a company whose concerns are mostly about pleasing the board, rather than demonstrating sincere interest for customer-relations.

I despise the corporate mentality.

But, I have to keep the roof over my head and food on the table so I endure and I continue to educate myself about copywriting, marketing, and brand building. I have plans for Copy With KB in 2025...

But, first...

I wanted to remind myself that even though I am not where I want to be with my business, 2024 did bring forth some successes that I should recognize and be proud about.

  1. I wrote and launched my website! This was such a labor of love and an incredible amount of frustration, so hitting that Publish button the first time was a thrill.

  2. I published 20 stories on Medium. Working past imposter syndrome and putting myself out into the world of content writing was terrifying...but I did it. And, I will continue to do so in 2025. I enjoy it even more than I imagined I would.

  3. I wrote spec pieces and worked with graphic designers. The prospect of selling myself to others for trade work was intimidating to say the least. But this ended up being a rewarding experience. I met some wonderful people and established connections.

  4. I created a business account on IG. It is difficult for me to put myself out there and be visual, but I am glad I opened this page specific to my business because it allows me to keep my personal page private. I have gained some great insight and ideas from this account.

  5. I bought a writing desk. This happened less than one week ago but it is the first piece in my soon-to-be-office! I am thrilled. Curating a space of my very own where I can focus without distractions (read: my husband and my dog - hehehe) will hopefully lead to better results in the upcoming year.

Heading into 2025...

I know I need to do more of the following:

  1. Find my target audience. This has been a huge struggle for me and I did not niche down because I am open to work with anyone in any business to begin with. (Ok, there are a few personal ethical standards I won't go against). After thinking about this subject oh-so-many-times, I plan to hone in on a more specific group so that I can pitch my services with a clearly defined purpose.

  2. Write like it's my job. Because I want it to be my job. I wrote more than I ever have during this year, but I know if I want to write full time, I need to write even more to continually polish my skills and find an undeniable brand voice.

  3. Pitch! It's time to start putting my name out there in a more vigorous way than I did this past year, plain & simple.

Certainly there is more to be done in 2025, but these are self-reminders & starting points. I know that the vagueness of my business in 2024 did not drive people to me, excited to work with me. I need to change that.

Lasering in on the focus of my business is my primary goal heading into the new year. I believe in myself and I want others to believe in me too. Despite the fact that I want to have my own thriving business, my main goal is to help other brands blossom and flourish.

Let's do this!

Cheers~
